TIBC is usually higher-than-normal when the body's iron stores are low. Higher-than-normal TIBC may mean:

• Iron deficiency anemia
• Pregnancy (late)

Lower-than-normal TIBC may mean:

• Cirrhosis
• Hemolytic anemia
• Hypoproteinemia
• Inflammation
• Liver disease
• Malnutrition
• Pernicious anemia
• Sickle cell anemia
