Prothrombin

The value should be 50 - 200% of the laboratory control or reference value.

Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results.

Decreased factor II activity may be the result of:

• Deficiency of factor II that is present at birth (congenital)
• Fat malabsorption
• Liver disease (such as cirrhosis)
• Vitamin K deficiency
• Taking warfarin

The test may also be performed for disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
