Acute Necrotizing Periodontal Disease. Acute necrotizing periodontal disease is an acute infection in the gums. It is characterized by the following:

• Black, dead tissue (necrosis)
• Spontaneous bleeding
• Rapid onset of pain
• Bad odor
• Blunted gum tissue (tissue is normally cone-shaped)
