Conflicting Results on Ibuprofen Preventing Alzheimer's

Ivanhoe Broadcast News

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen may protect you from Alzheimer's disease, but only if you start taking them at a very early stage.

But recent human studies show a different finding. A study published in Neurology in April shows NSAIDs don't prevent Alzheimer's disease in humans. For more than 12 years, 2,736 individuals were followed, 351 of who were heavy NSAID users. The individuals were all dementia-free at the start of the study. Researchers say the risk of developing dementia was 66 percent greater for heavy NSAID users compared to those who took little or no NSAIDs.
