Taiwan Lab Worker Recovering from SARS

The Taiwanese military scientist who became infected with SARS during a lab experiment is recovering, the Taiwan government says, adding that it has located at least some of the people who sat near him on a subsequent flight to Singapore.

The 44-year-old scientist, only referred to as Lt. Col. Chan, is said to be regaining his appetite at a Taipei hospital. He probably caught the virus when he handled a torn trash bag that leaked contaminated liquid, investigators tell the Associated Press.

After failing to report his possible infection and quarantine himself, the scientist traveled to Singapore and the United States about five days after the incident. Singapore has already quarantined more than 100 people the man came in contact with during a conference he attended. And Taiwan says it has located at least three passengers he sat near during his return flight from that conference.

The infected man later visited an undisclosed location in the United States, the AP reports, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control is said to be monitoring the conditions of people he came in contact with.

So far, no SARS symptoms have been reported in anyone who is known to have come in contact with him, the AP reports.
