(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Even an 8-year-old kid can handle the responsibility of wearing contact lenses, according a group of optometrists.
When compared to teens, kids between ages 8 and 12 do just as well with newly prescribed contacts, according to researchers from Ohio State University in Columbus. Researchers are following 169 children for the Contact Lens in Pediatrics (CLiP) study. Half of the participants are between ages 13 and 17 and the other half are between ages 8 and 12.

Researchers report preliminary results suggest younger children understand the importance of taking contacts out each night and starting with a fresh pair every two weeks.
Responses to a survey filled out by the children show they generally like wearing contacts more than wearing glasses. The children told researchers it was easier for them to be active while wearing contacts than when wearing glasses.
The children in the study wore contacts lenses for three months. Researchers are continuing to analyze the data and hope to have more concrete information about how well younger children handle wearing contacts.
