(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Following criticism and investigation by 11 state attorneys general, Anheuser-Busch agreed June 26 to cease producing caffeinated alcohol beverages.
The attorneys general launched an investigation into the content and marketing of Anheuser-Busch products like Tilt and Extra after reviewing published research on the dangers of the beverages. These products taste and look like popular non-alcoholic energy drinks. They are popular with young people who often believe that the caffeine in the drinks counteracts the intoxicating effects of the alcohol.

A study published in 2007 showed college students who drank alcohol with energy drinks were twice as likely to be injured and twice as likely to ride with an intoxicated driver than students who drank alcohol without energy drinks. Those who mixed alcohol and energy drinks were also more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior.
The stimulating effects of the caffeine in these products can mask feelings of intoxication, Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden was quoted as saying. Consumers feel alert, but make unsafe decisions as a result of alcohol impairment. Obviously, this creates a highly dangerous situation.
