(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- A serving of your favorite fish may be the key to keeping your mind sharp. A new study shows eating tuna and other broiled fish high in omega-3 fatty acids can preserve the brain into old age.
Out of a sample of more than 3,500 people over age 65, researchers found those who ate broiled or baked tuna and similar fish three or more times a week had a nearly 26 percent lower risk of having silent brain infarcts. Silent brain infarcts are small lesions in the brain that can cause loss of thinking skills, stroke or dementia.

Researchers also found people who regularly ate fish high in omega-3 fatty acids experienced fewer changes in the white matter in their brains.
Types of fish that carry these benefits include salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines and anchovies. Researchers say eating fried fish will not produce the same results.
Research shows silent brain infarcts affect about 20 percent of otherwise healthy elderly people.
