(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- We all know we should exercise and eat healthy to stay fit, but a new study finds a specific combination of exercise and nutritional supplement is the key for seniors to stay fit longer. The research finds taking carbohydrates and protein supplements just before and just after low-resistance exercise boosts muscle performance and slows muscle loss in people over the age of 65.
Investigators from Manchester Metropolitan University conducted the research. They selected 60 healthy, independent living adults 65 years or older for the study. The volunteers were randomly assigned into different groups that underwent different 12-week programs of physical activity and nutritional supplementation. Some groups did low-resistance exercise and other groups did high-resistance exercise. Study authors assessed the individuals at the end of the program.

Researchers say that muscle size and strength increased in all the groups. However, the results showed the older people saw the most benefits if they took supplements coupled with low-intensity exercise. Investigators say maintaining muscle mass can offer real improvements in the quality of life for older individuals. Study authors say they now want to look at this type of program as a way to help seniors or even for young orthopaedic surgery patients improve their mobility.
